By    |   Thursday, 28 May 2015 01:08 PM EDT

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott exchanged vows on June 18, 1953. They had four children: Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertine. The beloved Baptist preacher and civil rights leader's most famous quote about his children is, of course, this one:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

However, he also had many other things to say about children, family, and marriage. Among them were these quotes:

1. “Without love, there is no reason to know anyone, for love will, in the end connect us to our neighbors, our children and our hearts.”

2. “I said to my children, 'I'm going to work and do everything that I can do to see that you get a good education. I don't ever want you to forget that there are millions of God's children who will not and cannot get a good education, and I don't want you feeling that you are better than they are. For you will never be what you ought to be until they are what they ought to be.”

3. "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood."

4. “Babies, we are told, are the latest news from heaven.”

5. "The group consisting of mother, father and child is the main educational agency of mankind."

6. "God has set the type of marriage everywhere throughout the creation. Every creature seeks its perfection in another. The very heavens and earth picture it to us."

7. "There is no more lovely, friendly or charming relationship, communion or company, than a good marriage."

8. "Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave."

9. "War is the greatest plague that can afflict humanity, it destroys religion, it destroys states, it destroys families. Any scourge is preferable to it."
