How to Treat Lung Cancer

Early diagnosis of lung cancer improves the chances of survival.

Lung cancer stages are:

• First stage: Cancer is confined to the lung.
• Second and Third stages: Cancer spreads to the chest. Third stage indicates larger and more invasive tumors.
• Fourth stage: Cancer spreads to the rest of the body.

Treatments for lung cancer involve chemotherapy, radiation, surgical removal of the cancer, or combination of these.

1. Treatment in the first and second stages: Removing the tumor surgically is the principal form of treatment in the first and second stages.

2. Treatment in the second stage: In the second stage, if the tumor has penetrated lymph nodes, there is greater potential for cancer to spread and less chance of surgery removing the whole tumor. Sometimes, chemotherapy and gene therapy are prescribed as treatment in the second stage.

3. Treatment in the third stage: A combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is prescribed.

4. Treatment in the fourth stage: Only chemotherapy and care are prescribed.

At any stage, the treatment is decided considering the tumor location and spread and patient’s overall condition.
