Louisiana is considered to be a gun-friendly state and is relatively lax on gun laws compared to the rest of the nation. Residents are eager to protect their gun rights as hunting and gun ownership have deep roots in the region.

1. Sportsman's Paradise. The state dubs itself a “sportsman’s paradise” and efforts to enact any kind of gun control are often met with backlash, as reported by Reuters. Louisiana is also one of more than two-dozen states that are working against any kind of additional restrictions on gun ownership

2. Permits. Residents are not required to obtain a permit to purchase, hold a license, or register their firearm. The only permit that is required in the state is a permit to carry, which applies to handguns only.

Louisiana one of the few states in the nation that issues lifetime concealed carry permits to residents, although permit holders must attend gun safety training every five years.

3. Concealed-carry. Louisiana recognizes concealed-carry permits from other states as part of a reciprocity agreement. But there are a handful of states that do not recognize Louisiana’s permits, including Hawaii, New York, Nevada, California, Oregon, New Mexico, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Illinois.

4. Banned Owners. One statute Louisiana does apply in regards to gun regulation, which falls in line with other states in the nation, is the permitting of firearms for those convicted of domestic violence. Despite fierce opposition from the National Rifle Association, the state of Louisiana passed a law barring gun possession for anyone convicted of domestic violence in 2014. The NRA backed down quietly shortly after Louisiana passed the bill, according to the Huffington Post. Many other states followed.

5. Critics of Gun Laws.
With such lax gun laws in place, Louisiana does have its critics. In a 2013 report, 24/7 Wall Street that said Louisiana had the highest rate of gun-related violence in the country.
