Lithuanian Mayor Combats Illegal Cycle-Lane Parking

Wednesday, 03 August 2011 12:09 PM EDT

The mayor of Lithuania’s capital city, Vilnius, has taken the law into his own hands to stop drivers from parking illegally in bike lanes, reports the Independent.

A video was made in which Arturas Zuokas, 43, grins as he demolishes an illegally parked Mercedes with an armored vehicle. As the owner of the car comes out of a nearby shop wearing an expression of sheer horror, Zuokas shakes his head, scolds him for bad parking, and sweeps away the shattered glass as the squashed Mercedes is towed away.

“I wanted to draw attention to the fact that if you have a car and lots of money, it still doesn’t mean that you can park your car wherever you want,” Zuokas said.

A spokeswoman for the Mayor, Rasa Razgaitis, assured the public that the Mercedes was not actually the property of an illegal parker, but bought especially for the clip. Razgaitis said the stunt was meant to “raise the public’s awareness” and urge people in Vilnius to follow the rules.
