A leopard that mauled 11 Indian villagers has died of knife wounds sustained in a fierce showdown with forestry officials, reports
Chron.
The Associated Press reports that a male, adult leopard wandered into a densely populated area of Prakash Nagar village Tuesday where it was startled by curious crowds. When the leopard became aggressive, locals used knives, stones, and batons to try and drive it back to a wildlife sanctuary in West Bengal state. Six villagers, a policeman, and four forest guards were injured before the animal was finally subdued by a tranquilizer gun.
The cat died within hours of the incident from injuries inflicted by the villagers, and is undergoing a post-mortem examination.
Leopards are protected in India, though more are straying into villages in search of food.
