New L.A. Law to Limit Homework

Monday, 27 June 2011 03:28 PM EDT

A new policy in the L.A. Unified School District will prohibit teachers from counting homework as more than 10 percent of a student’s final grade, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The policy is designed to lessen the academic blow taken by those students with less than desirable home situations that hinder their ability to complete homework assignments.

Teachers are already very concerned about the new policy, fearing that it will encourage students to slack off.

“Students need to realize that they’re held accountable,” says L.A. English and history teacher Chris Johnson. “They have to rise up to meet that, organize their time, and be much more mature at a younger age than many students"
.
A number of other school districts across the country are considering a similar limitation on homework assignments as part of a larger movement to ease the burdens school children face outside of regular school hours.
