There are plenty of fun things to do in Kentucky with lots of storied attractions for families planning a vacation or staycation.

Here are seven great places to visit in the state of Kentucky:

1. Camp Wildcat Civil War Battlefield: Located in London, this is a great place for history buffs. The Battle of Camp Wildcat is recognized as the first Union victory of the Civil War. Follow the walking trail to Hoosiers Knob where the trenches are still visible.

2. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park: Located in Middlesboro, Cumberland Gap offers rich history, spectacular scenery, unique geologic sandstone formations, majestic underground caverns and diverse plant and animal life.

3. Godbey Appalachian Cultural & Fine Arts Center: Located in Cumberland, the center has an extensive collection of Appalachian artifacts, including thousands of oral histories, photographs, art collections, pottery, dulcimer making and music. There is an art gallery, arts and crafts studio, woodworking shop, black-box theater and the Center Stage Players performances.

4. Hal Rogers Family Entertainment Center/Kentucky Splash Waterpark: Located in Williamsburg, this one-stop fun destination offers the Triple Slide Complex, Wipeout Wavepool, Tad Pool Kiddy Island, Castaway River. Other Attractions include Kentucky Falls Miniature Golf, Thunder Road Go-Karts, Strike Three Batting Cages and Golf Driving Range families on vacation or staycation can enjoy.

5. Portal 31 Mine Tour: Located in Lynch, this fascinating tour offers families on vacation or staycation the unique experience of touring an actual coal mine by rail car. Participants wear the traditional protective gear of the coal miner as they enjoy animated exhibits along the tour. The site also features a 1920s lamphouse, bathhouse, L&N train depot and loadout system.

6. Loretta Lynn’s Homestead: Located in Van Lear Loretta Lynn's birthplace, better known as "Butcher's Holler," is nestled between two fog-shrouded mountains two miles southeast of the coal mining camp of Van Lear. Admission price for tours is $5 per person.

7. Highlands Museum & Discovery Center: Located in Elkhorn
Take the kids to the Highlands Museum & Discovery Center. You can take a load off in the Front Porch exhibit; ride in Little Joe, an actual river towboat; fly a plane at the Aviation Station and in a wind tunnel; learn about the Tri-State area from the era of Native Americans to the World Wars; and experience Country Music Heritage Hall with Highway 23 stars and the interactive Music Quilt.
