Kellogg Threatens Legal Action to Protect Toucan Logo

Tuesday, 23 August 2011 10:24 AM EDT

The Kellogg Co. cereal company, maker of Toucan Sam’s Froot Loops, is threatening to take legal action against the Maya Archaeology Initiative for its use of a similar toucan logo, reports Newser.

The Maya Archaeology Initiative is a non-profit group that works to defend Mayan culture. Because the toucan is native to Mesoamerica, the group chose the bird as its signature logo.toucan, sam, froot, loops, logo

Kellogg claims the logo is too similar to their Froot Loops mascot and could cause confusion among consumers.

A Kellogg attorney sent a letter to the Mayan group formally opposing the group’s use of its own toucan logo. The attorney asked that the group settle with Kellogg and agree to limit its usage of the image.
