Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s name comes up in most discussions about potential 2016 GOP candidates, but some say he’s seen as being “soft” on the issues that pull in the conservative Republican voters.
For instance, he fought for Medicaid expansion in Ohio, although he has stated emphatically that he believes the Affordable Care Act should be repealed.
The Columbus Dispatch talked with Kasich as he fought Republicans in the state to make the Medicaid expansion happen.
“I had a conversation with one of the members of the legislature the other day. I said, ‘I respect the fact that you believe in small government. I do, too. I also know that you’re a person of faith,” Kasich told the newspaper. “‘Now, when you die and get to the meeting with St. Peter, he’s probably not going to ask you much about what you did about keeping government small. But he is going to ask you what you did for the poor. You better have a good answer.’”
That attitude is a switch from when Kasich served in Congress, where he was known as a conservative who worked to cut Medicare and to freeze discretionary spending. Today, he seems to align more with compassionate conservatism ideology, which he praised in George W. Bush in 2000,
