For Pastor John Hagee, four blood moons within an 18-month period suggest a tumultuous period that could lead to Armageddon, the final battle on Earth, and the second coming of Christ.

The four lunar eclipses are unusual in such a short time because they normally only occur about twice a year. They are called blood moons or red moons and the four occurrences are referred to as a tetrad by astronomers. To believers of the coming Apocalypse, they represent turbulent times that have occurred in the past and in the near future.

Here are five key points Hagee centers on when making a case for the Apocalypse and the red moon connection:

1. The four blood moons occur around Jewish feast days in 2014 and 2015. In April of each year, lunar eclipses appear on Passover, and the blood moons of October 2014 and late September 2015 happen during the Feast of Tabernacles. Hagee stresses that God “is the one that is getting them in direct alignment on a certain day at a certain time …”

2. Past occurrences of tetrads have signaled enormous changes for the Jewish people, according to the John Hagee's "Four Blood Moons" book and video. The Jews were expelled from Spain during the four lunar eclipses in 1493-94. Following the re-establishment of Israel in 1948, the nation was involved in battles with the Arab states during the 1949-50 tetrad. Israel then experienced profound victory in the Six-Day War at the time of the four lunar eclipses in 1967-68.

3. The book of Genesis in the Bible provides us with lessons on turning to the sky for guidance, notes Hagee, pastor of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. He says that God “created the stars and heavens as signs” to communicate with His people and, according to Genesis 1:14, to “let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years.”

4. In Joel 2:30-31, it speaks more directly of the turmoil on Earth coinciding with signals from the heavens, Hagee explains. The verses mention wonders in the heavens and on Earth along with “blood and fire and billows of smoke.” The sun turns “to darkness and the moon to blood” to signal the Apocalypse and the return of Christ.

5. During the 2014-15 period of the four blood moons, serious threats surround Israel that could result in world-changing events, according to the "Four Blood Moons" sermon. Upheavals are occurring in Egypt, Syria and Iraq. Iran prepares to build nuclear weapons despite attempts at negotiations. Israel may turn to a military solution to defend itself, and this could set off the final battle that leads to the Rapture and Christ’s return, Hagee says.
