Can Social Networking Sites Cost you Your Job?

Wednesday, 01 December 2010 02:48 PM EST

Social networking is one of the revolutionary developments of this decade that has grown leaps and bounds and conquered literally everything in its way. People are hooked on social networking sites and love posting details about their lives.

These sites can make a positive difference in several fields. However, if not used appropriately, social networking sites can cost you your job.

Here is how:

1. Posts regarding your boss, company, or coworkers. Sharing one’s feelings about a boss, company, or coworkers can act against you. Having a boss or coworker on your social networking site, either as a friend or as a user, can be dangerous to your career. They can monitor what you are talking about, who you are talking to, and if you are posting any information on job search blogs.

2. Job search blogs. Did you know that a general Google search can list blogs, profiles, and posts from social networking sites as well? The information you post on the net is not private any more. Job search blogs that give out excessive information can help a manager trace the person and remove them from their job. Online reputation management is vital for Internet users. Companies today are making online reputation management a priority.

3. Online research about candidates. Potential employers may do online research about candidates, and if a candidate is found to post inappropriate, false, or misleading or defaming information, or if a candidate is found to be sharing too much work-related information, it may not only cost them their present job, they may not be considered for future jobs as well.

4. Time stamps. Job search blogs and regular posts always indicate a time stamp of the post. So, if one is on a social networking site and posting information during work hours, it can be traced and can cost you your job. Another pitfall can happen if you have been absent from work, giving false reasons, and are found on social networking sites.

With companies considering online reputation management seriously, if you are found on a social networking site doing inappropriate things, you may be fired. Avoid giving out your full name and excessive details online.
