Many Christians believe that Jesus is coming soon. The Christian belief in a second coming of Jesus is rooted in scripture that states that Jesus was caught up in the clouds and will come again in the same way. Most stop short of pointing to an exact date citing the biblical verse Mathew 24:36, which says, “No one knows the hour or the day…only the Father.”

That verse has not stopped people from guessing. Many were so convinced Jesus is coming soon that they named a date. Here are 8 recent examples:
  • 1981: In his 1978 book "Future Survival," Pastor Chuck Smith said he believed Jesus would probably come before the year 1981.

  • October 1992: A cult leader in Korea Lee Jang Rim stole millions of dollars from his followers in Mission for the Coming Days after convincing them that the rapture was going to happen on Oct. 28, 1992.
  • 1993: David Berg was the leader of the Children of God movement, currently known as Family International, predicted the second coming was happening that year.
  • June 1994: John Hinkle, pastor of Christ Church Los Angeles preached that Jesus is coming soon in 1994. He believed the date would be June 9. When it didn’t come, he claimed the rapture had happened invisibly.
  • September 1994: Radio evangelist Harold Camping published a book called "1994?" in which he predicted Jesus was coming again between Sept. 15–17, 1994. He used numerology and scripture as a basis for his prediction.
  • July 1999: The 16th-century soothsayer Michel D Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in the seventh month of the year 1999.
  • Jan. 1, 2000: Many groups predicted Jesus would come at the beginning of the new millennium. Among them were the cult House of Prayer which expected Jesus to come at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. They were kicked out of Israel when they were suspected of planning a mass suicide.
  • May and October 2011: Radio evangelist Harold Camping again said Jesus is coming soon in 2011. He preached the judgment day would occur on May 21, 2011 and the end of the world would be in October of the same year. According to Religious News Service, he decided to get out of the prediction business in 2012 calling his previous work "incorrect and sinful." Camping died in December of 2013 at the age of 92.
