Long running game show Jeopardy, hosted by Alex Trebek, has tried something new this week – a competition of man vs. machine in which human players Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings, battle against supercomputer Watson.
“You are about to witness what may prove to be an historica compentition,” Trebek told viewers at the beginning of the show.
As of the first round of last night’s show, man (Brad Rutter) and computer were tied at $5,000. Jennings was behind with $2,000.
Both Rutter and Jennings have previously appeared on Jeapordy; Rutter as the show’s all-time highest winner, raking in $3.25 million, and Jennings with the longest winning streak at 74 games.
Computer Watson is named after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson and is run on 10 computer servers all operating with the Linux system.
There were a broad variety of categories covered on last night’s show, but Watson prevailed with uncanny accuracy throughout most of the program, only suffering the occasional slip.
The battle continues tonight and Wednesday evening, with the winner taking home $1 million.
