Jeb Bush 2016: 7 Key Political Positions of GOP Presidential Hopeful

By    |   Friday, 19 Dec 2014 09:08 PM

Jeb Bush has been praised for his accomplishments as governor of Florida. He remains in line with some conservative principles, but also proposes new ideas that make him stand out as a 2016 presidential candidate.

Here are seven key political positions he has taken or supports:

1. Bush has been considered an innovative political leader in education reform, helping to improve school performance in Florida. His system of grading schools results in more state aid and higher teacher salaries for teachers.

2. As a supporter of immigration reform, he has recommended a clearer way for immigrants to seek legal residence through taxes, work requirements, and English literacy accomplishments.

3. Bush has said he would accept tax increases to help cut the federal deficit, but only if it would include major spending cuts. As governor of Florida, he was known as a tax cutter for businesses, investments, and homeowners. He says he does not like the idea of raising taxes, but wants to put everything on the table, including tax hikes for spending cuts, to reduce the enormous federal debt.

4. Although he supports spending reduction, on budget and economic issues, he would be willing to compromise as a 2016 presidential candidate. He favored the bank bailouts during the financial meltdown of 2008. He criticized the federal stimulus package as more spending instead of stimulating business and job growth.

5. When he was governor, he promoted encouragement rather than government solutions for civil rights. He recommended racial and gender diversity for trial judges, but worked to dismantle the affirmative action programs in Florida. He prefers traditional marriages, but feels same-sex marriages should also be recognized.

6. Bush can likely expect support from pro-life groups for a 2016 campaign. As governor, he helped create the “Choose Life” license plates available to Florida motorists as a positive message, through critics said it was state money used for a political cause. He ordered the feeding tube reinserted for Terri Schiavo in a nationally known case that divided the woman’s family and the nation on life-support issues.

7. On gun issues, Bush supports Florida’s stand-your-ground law, which allows deadly force when someone is threatened. He has supported the concealed carry laws in Florida and other states, but also favors instant background checks.
