Israel's Stance on Medical Marijuana

By    |   Wednesday, 27 May 2015 06:34 PM EDT

Israel, a nation rich in history and diversity, holds its reputation when it comes to medical marijuana research as well. It is the home of “the father of medical marijuana,” Professor Raphael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the 1960s, JNS.org reported.

That history continues today. Israel is leading the world in terms of its cannabis research. Most recently, research has produced an oral dose that doesn’t create a high, but does aid epileptic children, according to the Washington Post.

Agricultural officials are in favor of capitalizing on Israel’s advances and superiority in this field. Many wish to export their superior products. But government officials are unlikely to ever allow it, the Washington Post said.

Although medical marijuana has been legal in Israel for over seven years now, and it is legal in several states, Israel’s reputation is too important to officials.

“[Officials] don’t want Israel to be seen all over the world as a country that exports weapons and cannabis,” Michael Dor, the senior medical adviser in Israel’s Health Ministry’s cannabis unit, told the Washington Post.

Dor urges that Israel must act quickly to keep its market advantage in this industry. “The knowledge will leak outside Israel, and the knowledge is worth a lot of money,” he said.

A recent Haaretz article profiled cannabis expert Dr. Alan Shackelford in an article titled “Can Israel Lead the World in Weed?” As the article noted, “Marijuana is medicine but it’s also businesses.”

Notably with Israel’s medical marijuana experience is not just its research base, but also its transition into the pharmaceutical industry. The Jewish Journal reported that Israel has incorporated medical marijuana into its society much more seamlessly than states in American that have faced conflicting laws and regulations.
