Global Warming in Israel: 2 Times Netanyahu Has Spoken on Climate Change

By    |   Thursday, 05 November 2015 04:57 PM EST

Israel has seen and worked to address the effects of climate change, particularly in regard to its own water security. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken specifically about the desert nation's successful efforts to confront the impact of climate change.

In 2010 Israel signed off on a $570 million plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by the year 2020, according to The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu spoke on the importance of addressing climate change.

“The recent dry months, including the driest November in the history of the state, are a warning light to us all that the threat of climate change is no less menacing than the security threats that we face. I intend to act determinedly in this field. In a country that suffers from a severe water shortage, this is an existential struggle,” Netanyahu said during the 2010 cabinet meeting when the pact was signed.

In 2014, Netanyahu met with California Gov. Jerry Brown to establish a technology-and-business-sharing agreement.

The two states have similar climates but California is in the midst of a massive drought that has the chance to alter the state’s economy.

This meeting gave the Israel prime minister an opportunity to promote his country's water-saving initiatives and technologies that could benefit the drought-stricken West Coast.

“California, I hear, has a big water problem. We in Israel don’t have a water problem. We use technology to solve it, in recycling, in desalination, in deep drip irrigation and so on. And these technologies could be used by the state of California to eliminate its chronic drought problem,” Netanyahu told Bloomberg Television in an interview.

“Our rainfall has dropped by half in the 65 years of Israel’s existence, our population grew 10-fold and our economy grew 70 times. How come we don’t have a water problem? Because we use technology to solve it,” said Netanyahu.
