Is Global Warming Real? Of Course, According to These 7 Websites

By    |   Monday, 27 October 2014 03:07 PM EDT

If you’ve ever wondered, "Is global warming real?" you'll find hundreds of sites online to help convince you that it is. Here are seven websites that say, “Of course it is."

1. SkepticalScience.com was launched by John Cook with the Global Change Institute in Queensland, Australia. The site aims to explain what peer reviewed science has to say about global warming, arguing that most so-called climate change skeptics are motivated by politics rather than science. Cook says those working to debunk global warming claims don’t consider the bulk of scientific evidence for man-made temperature changes. The site says skeptics concentrate on a small number of growing glaciers while ignoring a global trend of shrinking glaciers. Skeptical Science says it is funded only through Paypal donations and Cook’s personal expenses.

2. EDF.org is the official website of the Environmental Defense Fund, which aims to “preserve the natural systems on which all life depends… (and) find practical and lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems.” Climate, oceans, ecosystems and health are EDF priorities. The site’s section on Climate and Energy features a post titled, “Climate change: Catastrophe in the making?” The post says Hurricane Sandy in 2012 highlighted the need for urgent action on global warming, as Bloomberg Businessweek declared, “It’s global warming, stupid.”

3. Grist.org offers irreverent environmental news and commentary. The site covers climate and energy issues and aims “to get people talking, thinking, and taking action.” Grist says it reaches more than 2 million people each month and mobilizes more than half of its readers into action. An Oct. 9 post includes video of an interview with Naomi Klein, author of “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate,” where she tells Grist that climate activists need to get comfortable attacking capitalism.

4. DeSmogBlog.com is a site dedicated to investigating the academic and industry backgrounds of so-called climate science deniers. The site says its database highlights energy industry payouts to many experts “involved in the PR spin campaigns that are confusing the public and stalling action on global warming.” DeSmogBlog asks for names of climate change skeptics so it may investigate their corporate ties and backgrounds.

5. Greenpeace.org is perhaps the most well-known organization campaigning against global warming. The organization formed 30 years ago to use “peaceful protect and creative communication to expose global environmental problems” and to promote solutions. The site’s home page declares “Climate change is a reality… By the end of the century, if current trends continue, the global temperature will likely climb higher than at any time in the past two million years.”

6. NRDC.org is the website of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which calls itself the nation’s most effective environmental action group. NRDC has 1.4 million members and online activists. The organization’s top priority listed on its website is curbing global warming, as well as creating a clean energy future. NRDC’s issues page reads: “Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution — they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually.”

7. WorldWildlife.org is an international fundraising organization that works with environmental groups to advance the conservation movement. WWF believes strongly that rising sea levels and warmer oceans are threatening global wildlife, freshwater supplies and crops. “Climate change poses a fundamental threat to the places, species and people’s livelihoods WWF works to protect. To adequately address this crisis we must urgently reduce carbon pollution and prepare for the consequences of global warming, which we are already experiencing.”
