Wisconsin ranks toward the middle nationwide in terms of illegal immigration. A study released in December 2014 placed the Badger State in a tie for 26th among states in terms of the number of undocumented immigrants living there.

The Pew Research Center released estimates in December 2014 that put Wisconsin’s unauthorized immigrant population for 2012 at 85,000, leaving it in a tie with Indiana at 26th among the nation’s states. The center estimated Wisconsin’s number of illegal immigrants had risen from about 10,000 in 1990 to 20,000 in 1995, 50,000 in 2000, 75,000 in 2005, and 85,000 in 2006, then dropped to 70,000 by 2011 before rising to 85,000 the following year.

Urgent: Do You Support Immigration Reform?

The Pew Research Center previously released estimates indicating unauthorized immigrants in 2010 made up 1.8 percent of Wisconsin’s population and 2 percent of its labor force, according to Slate.

The 2014 Pew Research Center release indicated an estimated 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants lived in the U.S. in 2012 — down from a peak of 12.2 million in 2007 and unchanged since 2009. The Department of Homeland Security estimated that the nationwide illegal immigrant population in 2012 at 11.43 million, down from 11.59 million in 2010. Homeland Security estimates are available for only the 10 states thought to have the largest illegal immigration populations, according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform. Wisconsin wasn’t in the top 10 for 2010.

FAIR estimated that Wisconsin’s illegal alien population for 2010 at 95,000. FAIR projected that the Badger State’s illegal immigrant population would rise to 6,969,000 by 2050.
