Hunter education is a requirement in nearly every state in the U.S., and hunting in Utah requires most hunters born after Dec. 31, 1965, to pass the course in order to obtain a hunting license.
The education course should be viewed as a worthwhile endeavor that helps protect people from each other and themselves as well as teach about conservation best practices and honoring the land and privilege to hunt it.

Here are four things to keep in mind about the hunter education requirement in Utah:
1. Trial hunting program
The one exception to the hunter education requirement is for anyone over the age of 12 who wants to try hunting on a trial basis. These hunters must still purchase a hunting license and be accompanied by a fully licensed hunter who is at least 21 or older. Hunters can operate for three years in this capacity before being required to complete the hunter education course. Budding hunters who opt for this trial hunting program will be limited on the permits they can obtain.
2. Hunter education
A general hunter education course includes sections about firearm safety, wildlife management, and potentially life-saving survival skills. Hunters can take this course in person, or they have the option to complete most of the work online and then come in for a field day to be evaluated.
3. Fur harvester education
Anyone interested in hunting furbearing animals in Utah who was born after Dec. 31, 1984, must complete the fur harvester education course, which discusses trap usage and proper technique. This course is available in-person or online with an in-person field day.
4. Extended archery orientation
If you would like to participate in one of Utah’s extended archery hunts, then you must complete the extended archery orientation course, which can be done online.
