Hunting in New Jersey: Top Spots for Hunting in the Garden State

New Jersey is renowned for its prime hunting spots. With more than 750,000 areas available for hunters, there are areas ideal for many different hunting scenarios. New Jersey harbors a wonderful array of species that are available to hunt, such as deer, wild turkey, small game, and waterfowl.

There are spaces to hunt in 27 New Jersey state parks, 348,000 acres in the state's Wildlife Management Centers and other assorted parks. It is important to note that not all public spaces are available to hunt on. All hunters should check New Jersey's Division of Fish and Wildlife's website to ensure that their hunting spot is legal. Here are some of the best spots to hunt in the Garden State.

  • Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, Six Mile Run Reservoir Site - 
Field and Stream magazine calls Six Mile Run an "underutilized hotspot." This 2,000-acre plot of land is a great place to bag impressive deer. The terrain is composed of wetlands, crop fields, forests, and pastures.

  • Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area
 - Foremost Hunting.com raves about these 12,000 acres located in Ocean County. They laud its "incredibly diverse set of habitats … [That range] from hardwoods to upland to pines." Come to Colliers Mills if you seek both great deer and pheasant hunting.

  • Assunpink Wildlife Management Area and Turkey Swamp Wildlife Management Area - 
These two areas are both located in Monmouth County. Together, they provide hunters with more than 10,000 acres ideal for hunting bucks.

  • High Point State Park
 - This is located next to several other good hunting spots, such as Hainsville Wildlife Management Area and Flatbrook-Roy Wildlife Management Area. All of these places are ideal for hunting deer, waterfowl, turkeys, grouse, and timberdoodles. The terrain is mountainous with forests and several river beds.
  • Rancocas State Park - This park is used exclusively for bow hunting. Located in Burlington County, it is filled with deer. Bring your boots for this one; the habitat is composed of hardwoods, tidal marsh, and creek bottom habitats.
