Hunting in Montana: Top Spots for Hunting in the Treasure State

By    |   Wednesday, 27 May 2015 01:48 AM EDT

Montana is a giant state, and trying to decide where to go hunting can be overwhelming. Luckily, hunters have reached a general consensus on some of the best places to hunt for different types of game, offering newcomers great tips and tricks that make picking the best spot easier.

For hunters eager to find elk in Montana, Field & Stream reports that there is no spot better than the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Located in the southwest part of the state, near Dillon, this forest provides great security cover for elk, attracting them to the area. These spots play a double role, because hunters can use them for their own cover as well. As 50 percent of Montana’s yearly elk harvest comes from this area, it is truly the best spot in Montana for hunting elk.

Hunters seeking a great destination for whitetail deer – one of Montana’s most prevalent game animals – should check out the state’s District 285 as recommended by Outdoor Life. Located between the Swan and Mission ranges, the Seeley-Swan Valley is an excellent and relatively reliable place to find trophy bucks. The valley is mostly conifer forest, a plus for hunters, because the deer feel safe in its cover, and the hunters can conceal themselves among the trees, too. One negative to this location is that it is in grizzly country so hunters need to be on their guard, but those who are adequately prepared and cautious are likely to have great experiences in this area.

Of course, big game is not the only thing to hunt in Montana. Among other small critters and birds, waterfowl are some of the most popular animals to hunt. For this, Wide Open Spaces lists a number of highly recommended hunting spots including Red Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge, Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, and Nine Pipe National Wildlife Refuge. All of these locations are reportedly great for various waterfowl, especially ducks, and some offer additional targets such as big game and fish.

Though these are some of the top hunting spots in Montana, one thing is certain: you really cannot go wrong in choosing which Montana hunting ground to visit!
