Wyoming’s prairies, alpine mountains, and high-desert plains make for some of the best hunting in the country. The state’s variety of prey includes elk, antelope, sage grouse, and mule deer. While Wyoming Game and Fish Department maps show where game can be found and legally hunted, outfitters and local hunting experts can point to the best spots.
One of the most famous hunting
areas within Wyoming is the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, also known as the Serengeti of North America. Near the center lies Jackson Hole, a valley filled with elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and black bear game.

For elk hunting, recommended spots are the Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Shoshone National Forest,
according to Field & Stream magazine. Both areas have large populations of bulls. Bridger-Teton hunting areas are within an alpine basin. The Shoshone region offers wilderness elk hunting.
Another unusual area is the Killpecker Sand Dunes in Sweetwater County. The red desert terrain is home to the desert elk – a breed found only in Wyoming,
according to the Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board.
