Hunting in Pennsylvania: 3 Things to Know Before Applying for a Hunting Permit for Adults

By    |   Thursday, 28 May 2015 03:00 PM EDT

Pennsylvania is one of the top hunting states in the nation, but before you go on a bear hunt or even lace up your shoes to set out in the Pennsylvania wilderness, you need a valid hunting license.

Here are three things you need to know before applying for a hunting license in Pennsylvania:

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

1. All first-time hunters and trappers
, no matter how old they are, must successfully complete a Basic Hunter-Trapper Education course. Adults can do that in the classroom or entirely online. It takes 4 to 6 hours to do it online, and you can complete it at your own pace. You can study the course material for free and pay $19.50 once you’ve passed the certification exam.

2. Once you’ve learned about safe and responsible hunting, you need to figure out what kind of license you want. The basic adult resident hunting license is issued to residents age 17 to 64. Many licenses are add-ons, such as to hunt bears or spring turkeys.

There are discounts for seniors, military members and disabled veterans. Check the Pennsylvania Game Commission site for details.

3. Applications for most licenses are available online at the Pennsylvania Game Commission website. You can also fill out a form at a game commission or county treasurer’s office or at your local sporting goods store.

If you are just renewing a license and have your customer identification number, that will make the process easier. But leave yourself enough time. It can take seven to 10 business days to receive your hunting license.
