Hunting in Idaho: 3 Animals to Hunt in the Winter

By    |   Friday, 22 May 2015 02:03 PM EDT

Hunting in Idaho during the winter season is a completely different experience than any other time of year. The elements are at their most harsh, but you also have the ability to follow tracks in the snow. Not all animals can be hunted legally year-round, however – for instance, you cannot shoot black bear or elk in the winter months.

How much you have to pay to hunt each one will differ depending on whether you are a resident of Idaho or not and that the cost of out-of-state tag fees are significantly higher than tags for residents.

Regardless of whether you live in or out of state, you need to have a valid Idaho hunting license and tag for the animal, as well as have passed the mandatory safety course, and all state rules and regulations pertain to legal hunting.

Here are three animals that can be legally hunted in Idaho in the winter:

1. Gray Wolves
Winter is prime wolf hunting season on public land. If you are wolf hunting in Idaho, you can buy up to five wolf tags per calendar year. You cannot use bait or dogs to hunt wolves in Idaho, but you can use electronic calls to attract the animals.

Winter is also a popular time to hunt mountain lion in most parts of Idaho. You can use hunting hounds to track mountain lion as well in most parts of the state during the winter. In order to find out where you can hunt for mountain lion in Idaho, take a look at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game website.

3. Waterfowl
During December and most of January hunters in Idaho can also buy a hunting license and tags for waterfowl like ducks and geese. Hunting waterfowl in Idaho, however, in winter is restricted to certain areas. You'll want to make sure you check the Idaho Department of Fish and Game's website to know where and when you can take aim.
