Hunting in Hawaii: 4 Animals To Hunt in the Winter

By    |   Monday, 25 May 2015 08:35 PM EDT

Hunting in Hawaii isn’t over just because it’s the winter – especially in a tropical state where winter still brings warm temperatures. In fact, there are several species whose hunting seasons begin or extend through the winter months.

If birds are your preferred species of prey, winter is the ideal time to bag them, with the hunting of many species of game birds permitted in Hawaii during this time.

While the larger game is permitted a break for breeding or to prevent over-hunting, consider focusing on smaller game.

The following species are legal to hunt in Hawaii in winter, according to the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources:

1. Doves
You can hunt barred doves, mourning doves, and spotted doves during mid- to late-January. For mourning doves and spotted doves, you can bag 10 per day total. For barred doves you can bag 20 per day. You can hunt all three on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays, and can hunt them on both public and private land.

When hunting on private land you must have permission from the property owner. For mourning doves, you can use bird calls but cannot use those that are recorded or enhanced. You also cannot use live birds as decoys.

2. Pheasant and Quail

Through late January, you can hunt the ring-neck pheasant, green pheasant, and Nepal Kalij pheasant. For the ring-neck and green varieties, you can bag three total per day, males only. For the Nepal Kalij, you can bag three per day of either sex.

During this same time period, you can also hunt California quail, Japanese Valley quail, and Gambels’ quail. You can bag 15 total quail per day of either sex. Hunting days include Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays.

3. Wild Turkey
Hawaii has a special spring season for turkey hunting, but the regular season ends in mid- to late January. You can bag one turkey of either sex for the entire regular turkey hunting season. Turkey hunting is allowed on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays at both public and private hunting grounds.

4. Chestnut Bellied Sandgrouse
Hunt this bird through the end of January and bag up to 10 per day of either sex. Days authorized for hunting on both public and private lands are Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays.
