Hunting in Hawaii: 3 Animals To Hunt in the Summer

By    |   Monday, 25 May 2015 08:24 PM EDT

Outdoor activities of all kinds abound in Hawaii during the summer months, and that includes hunting. For many species, the hunting season ends or begins in the summer, giving you ample opportunity to combine your favorite outdoor sports.

Many of the animals legal to hunt in the summer are larger prey that will keep hunters in practice for fall, when even more animals are in season. Some of these animals are legal to hunt in specific areas at other times of the year, as well, but at some locations you can only hunt them during the summertime.

The following animals are in season and legal to hunt during the summer in Hawaii, according to the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources:

1. Mouflon Sheep
You can hunt this animal in August, though specific dates vary by method of hunting used. Some have a hunting period of eight consecutive days, while others are only open to hunters on Saturdays.

In addition, you’ll need a tag just for the mouflon sheep hunt, and some hunts use a lottery system to determine who and how many hunters can participate. Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser newspaper said residents pay $20 per tag and nonresidents pay $125 per tag. The bag limit is one per season.

2. Wild Goat (some areas)
Hunting seasons for wild goat vary by location, with some areas allowing it all year long. In other areas, you may only hunt this animal from July through September. You’ll need a special tag for these hunts, which take place over eight consecutive weekends.

You can only hunt wild goat on Saturdays and Sundays, and dates for individual hunters are assigned on a lottery basis. Dogs are not permitted during this hunt.

3. Wild Pig (some areas)
Like the wild goat, the wild pig is legal to hunt year-round in some locations and only during certain months in others. At some hunting grounds, you can hunt wild pig only through June, while others being the season in July.

You can hunt on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays, and can use knives or bow and arrow. Some locations allow hunting with dogs.
