Hunting in Idaho: 3 Animals to Hunt in the Spring

By    |   Friday, 22 May 2015 01:35 PM EDT

When it comes to hunting for big game in Idaho, spring seems like a beautiful season to do so. Unfortunately, the spring in Idaho is especially limited when it comes to which animals can be legally hunted. Deer and elk are off-limits during this season, for instance.

Here are three animals you can legally hunt during the spring in Idaho, between March and May, as long as you have a valid Idaho hunting license and tag for the animal and follow all state rules and regulations pertain to legal hunting in Idaho.

1. Black Bear
Black bears can be hunted in the spring in Idaho in certain regions as long as you do not kill a mama bear and her cubs. During the spring black bear season, it is legal to hunt one bag per tag, which currently costs $11.50 for Idaho residents and $186 for out of state visitors. This is in addition to the purchase of an Idaho hunting license. Black bears can be hunted with the assistance of dogs in Idaho, so long as you follow all the rules pertaining to this.

2. Mountain Lion
Mountain lions can be hunted in nearly all regions of Idaho through the end of March, after which the areas where you can hunt these big cats becomes more limited. Check the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for specifics. Like hunting black bear, in Idaho dogs can be used to hunt mountain lions at most times.

3. Gray Wolf
Hunting gray wolves in spring in Idaho is slightly more restrictive than doing so in fall, but it's still possible. In many parts of the state, wolf tags are given out through the end of March, but in some areas (and especially on private land) wolves can be hunted through the end of June. In most public land areas, however, there is a harvest limit on the number of wolves that can be hunted during each season.
