Hunting in Connecticut: 3 Animals To Hunt in the Spring

While the majority of hunting seasons in Connecticut occur in the fall, there are still a variety of animals to hunt during the spring.

Here are three animals that can be hunted in Connecticut during the spring, as dictated by the Connecticut Department of Natural Resources:

1. Crows
The crow hunting season includes various dates throughout the whole year. Moving from the winter season into the spring, crows can be hunted from Jan. 10 through March 28. However, they cannot be hunted on Sundays. There is no limit to how many crows a hunter can take in a single day or in the season as a whole. One important note about crow hunting is that those hunting crows from a blind or stationary position are exempt from the Connecticut’s fluorescent orange requirement, which states that anyone hunting between September 1 and the last day of February must wear a certain amount of fluorescent orange clothing visible from all sides with a few exceptions.
2. Woodchuck
A popular target for hunters with an abundant population, woodchucks are included in several hunting seasons throughout the year in Connecticut. Spring dates range from March 16 to April 28. There are no daily or seasonal limits for the number of woodchucks hunters can take. Beyond having the appropriate licenses and permits for the weapons used, there are no special regulations for hunting woodchucks.

3. Coyote
A species invasive to Connecticut, coyotes can be hunted during most of the year, except the month of May, the peak of the canines’ mating and birthing season. There is no limit to the number of coyotes a hunter can take in a day nor the number that can be taken in the season as a whole. However, whenever a coyote is hunted, the hunter must report the kill online, by telephone, or by tagging the pelt of the animal. Taking hunted coyotes without completing one of these three alternatives is illegal, so it is very important to remember this detail.
