What is Honeymoon Israel?

By    |   Wednesday, 15 July 2015 03:25 PM EDT

Honeymoon Israel offers the chance for couples to spend nine days in Israel for a fraction of the cost.

The organization estimates the cost at $10,000 per couple, though participating couples contribute $1,800, with the rest subsidized as a gift from the Jewish community. Honeymoon Israel seeks couples who've either been married for less than five years or are in a lifelong, committed relationship. At least one member must be Jewish and between ages 25 and 40.

Honeymoon Israel welcomes Jewish-Jewish, interfaith and LGBTQ couples.

The goal of the trip is to allow travelers to show Israel's culture, economy, politics and nature in a unique way, according to the site. A group of 20 couples from the same city spend nine days in the country, touring Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, climbing Masada and floating in the Dead Sea, according to Valley Beit Midrash, another organization that sponsors the excursions.

Americans Mike Wise and Avi Rubel founded the organization.

“For many of our participants, whether Jewish or not, this trip might be their first Jewish experience, Wise said, according to Haaretz. “Our goal is to offer an enjoyable and memorable experience as a starting point for their personal connection to Jewish life.”

As part of the trip, visitors will participate in Shabbat experiences and visit important religious sites. Trips are planned through local partners with an emphasis on individual interests.

In addition, couples get to sample local cuisine and enjoy Tel Aviv night life, as well as interact with the people who live in the country.

The organization’s mission is "to expand the definition of Jewish life in America and to offer enjoyable experiences for couples to connect with one another and to the Jewish community in whatever way works for them. Honeymoon Israel does not have a specific agenda or prescription for this but rather seeks to support couples in their own exploration and to foster the organic development of community," according to its website.
