5 Trending Honeymoon Destinations

By    |   Monday, 27 July 2015 03:49 PM EDT

If you're considering a new kind of beach getaway, adventure travel, a destination outside your comfort zone, or a place to escape and be pampered, here are five top honeymoon destinations that have experienced a surge in bookings.

1. With plenty of flights and all-inclusive beach resorts, Mexico has become a popular destination for honeymooners, according to Fodor's.

From Acapulco to Cancun, to Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, and Mazatlan, the country offers golf, the ocean views, sailing, snorkeling and plenty of fine dining — some "hard to beat diversity" for tropical romance, Fodors added.

2. Those who love the beach and also watersports have chosen the Bahamas as a top honeymoon destination. With well-known tourist areas like New Providence, Grand Bahama, Bimini, Abacos, Eleuthera, and Andros as well as plenty of hidden cays for island-hopping on your own boat, the Bahamas earn a top spot on Fodor's honeymoon list as well.

Did we mention turquoise blue waters, white sand, and playful dolphins?

Looking for some exotic hot spots? The Travel Channel has some far-flung destinations for honeymoon travelers.

3. At the top of its list is "spicy" Zanzibar, an island chain off the coast of Tanzania. Zanzibar, a key port in the early spice trade, still grows and sells many of your favorite kitchen aromatics, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and coriander.

Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania, still retains many ancient African and Arab influences from its trading days in its architecture. The former home of 19th-century Scottish missionary Dr. David Livingston is also preserved there.

Yet, Zanzibar's white sand beaches and crystalline Indian Ocean are still a largely undiscovered paradise.

4. Also high on the Travel Channel's list is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Not just for sharks but a keen place for lovers, the beaches offer perfect spots for private picnics and plenty of helicopter tours for a look at the island from above. Yes, it's heart-shaped.

5. Topping the list for honeymoon destinations on wedding-planning website The Knot is Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Dubbed the "most romantic" destination, the website notes that "It's the stuff honeymoon fantasies are made of: crystal-clear waters, picturesque mountains, and a coral reef swirling with colorful fish."

Other things The Knot recommends to do: a helicopter tour of Mount Otemanu and visits to black pearl and vanilla bean farms.
