Shirley MacLaine on TV: How Her Star Power Went Beyond the Big Screen

Shirley MacLaine is best known for her roles in Hollywood in films such as “The Apartment” and “Terms of Endearment.” But MacLaine’s acting credentials extend beyond the big screen. Her star power often brought her to television and throughout her career she has published several books.

In 1971, MacLaine became the star of the television series “Shirley’s World.” MacLaine played Shirley Logan, a world traveling photographer and magazine writer. The show only lasted a year, in which MacLaine appeared in 17 episodes.

In 1977, she starred in the television special “Where Do We Go From Here,” a look at the United States and the future in the next 200 years.

MacLaine's other television performances include:

–MacLaine appeared in three episodes of “The Dinah Shore Chevy Show” from 1958 to 1959.

– “The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir” (1975) (MacLaine performed, produced and directed in this documentary).

– “Shirley MacLaine: Illusions” (1982).

– “The Shirley MacLaine Show” (1985).

– “The Salem Witch Trials” (2003).

MacLaine doesn't devote her whole life to performing. In 1970, she published her first book “Don’t Fall Off the Mountain,” an autobiographical book of her life. Her writings include spirituality, civil liberties and women’s issues.

Other books published by MacLaine include: "Out on a Limb" (1983), "Going Within" (1989), "The Camino: A Journey of the Spirit" (2000),  "Out on a Leash" (2003), "My Lucky Stars: A Hollywood Memoir" (1995), and "I'm Over All That: And Other Confessions" (2011).
