Friday, 12 November 2010 12:28 PM EST

HIV/AIDS is a crisis that has attracted worldwide attention, and new research is going on worldwide to find effective prevention and treatment methods for HIV/AIDS. Here are a few of the latest medical breakthroughs that give hope to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment:

1. The main component of HIV/AIDS treatment is antiretroviral treatment along with other agents that help fight infections. Now antiretroviral HIV treatment is being recommended in the earlier stages of the virus.
2. Recently, researchers from Harvard University claimed to have developed a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. Work is also being conducted to find treatments for HIV/AIDS that carry minimal side effects.
3. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a test that can detect the AIDS virus as well as its antibodies within a period of 20 days. This should provide a more comprehensive understanding of how to control HIV/AIDS and pave the way for more effective HIV/AIDS treatment methods.
4. In terms of prevention, a team of researchers has developed a vaginal gel for women, which is expected to decrease the risk of acquiring HIV infection from an infected partner.
