What Is HGH?

Thursday, 23 December 2010 10:43 AM EST

Human growth hormone (HGH) is a powerful anabolic hormone that is naturally produced and secreted by the human pituitary gland to regulate growth and development. A lack of this growth hormone causes Dwarfism.

In the United States, two genetically engineered drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug administration (FDA) for therapeutic use as exogenous human growth hormone supplements: Somatotropin and Somatrem. Clinically, the only indication for exogenous human growth hormone administration is for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency.

Exogenous human growth hormone mimics actions of the endogenous hormone. A growth hormone is a polypeptide secreted by the anterior pituitary gland into general circulation. Its metabolic effects are divided into two categories: acute and delayed. Acute effects of growth hormone secretion are insulin like. They are observed after administering physiologic doses of the growth hormone and cease after three to four hours. On the other hand, delayed effects are seen after four hours and produce long-term metabolic consequences of chronic growth hormone exposure.

Injectable HGH is most effective when applied by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, but these are much less effective than the real recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH). Injectable HGH (Somatropin, rDNA Origin, for injection) is a polypeptide hormone of recombinant DNA Origin. It is synthesized in a strain of Escherichia coli that has been modified by the addition of the gene for human growth hormone. Jintropin® is now the most well known and respected brand of rhGH and made by gene science. Jintropin (HGH) can produce various benefits such as reducing excess body fat, especially abdominal fat, increasing muscle mass, reducing wrinkling of the skin and some other effects of skin aging, re-growing internal organs that have atrophied with age, and increasing bone density.

The abuse of HGH leads to dwarfism, skeletal changes, enlargement of fingers and toes, cardiomegaly, hyperlipidemia, arthritis, impotence, diabetes, and growth of orbit and lengthening of jaw. HGH represents a particular challenge to the sports community and the scientific and ethical questions regarding its use may be more urgent if unlimited quantities of the drug became available to the public.
