By    |   Tuesday, 12 April 2016 03:28 PM EDT

There are many herbal thyroid boosters that can help regulate the thyroid gland. There are also some herbs that may not directly balance the thyroid but may help alleviate symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

The following eight herbs are regarded as natural support for the thyroid.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The One Secret to a Healthy Thyroid

According to Hypothyroidism Natural Treatments, the following herbal thyroid boosters are for people with an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism:

1. Ashwaghanda – This adaptogenic herb is one of the most common herbs used to boost a sluggish thyroid gland. It helps to decrease inflammation in the thyroid gland and boost the immune system. Ashwaghanda can also help relieve the fatigue and lack of mental focus associated with hypothyroidism.

2. Bacopa – This herb is used in Ayurvedic medicine and is helpful for promoting mental focus and memory while reducing inflammation.

3. Black walnut – Because the thyroid gland uses iodine, a key nutrient, to produce its thyroid hormones, iodine deficiency can contribute to hypothyroidism. The body does not produce iodine so it needs to be consumed. Black walnut is a good source of dietary iodine.

4. Bladderwrack – This herb comes from a seaweed found in the Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. It is known as a great source of dietary iodine and can help boost the thyroid.

For people with overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, these herbs can be helpful:

5. Bugleweed – This herb is helpful for people with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disease and the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Dr. Eric Osansky writes at Natural Endocrine Solutions that bugleweed can help relieve common symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

6. Lemon BalmThe University of Maryland Medical Center says 300mg to 500mg of lemon balm, taken three times per day, can help normalize an overactive thyroid. They also recommend steeping the herb in hot water to make tea.

Finally, these herbal remedies provide indirect benefits and symptom relief for patients who have either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism:

7. Echinacea – This herb is recommended by Osansky for its well-known immune-boosting abilities.

8. Eleuthero – Like ashwaghanda, eleuthero is an adaptogenic herb, Osansky explains. While it does not directly affect the thyroid, it can help regulate the adrenal gland response, which is often problematic in patients with either thyroid disorder.
