Should I Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wednesday, 25 May 2011 04:01 PM EDT

Most specialists advise removal of impacted (or inappropriately positioned) wisdom teeth. Such wisdom teeth should be removed/pulled out before they actually start causing serious problems. Also, removal should be done at a young age, as later on, the removal becomes difficult. Additionally, with age, complications associated with removal of teeth may also increase and healing generally becomes difficult. The removal is definitely recommended in case of impaction of the third molar teeth.

Malpositioned wisdom teeth should be removed if there are certain symptoms like pericoronitis, i.e., infection of the surrounding gum tissue.
If your jaw is swelled and has become stiff and if you are experiencing pain as well at the back of your jaw, don’t simply take a pain-killer for a temporary relief, as these may be the symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth.

But that’s only a possibility. These symptoms may also be due to a serious infection. So, let a dentist evaluate your case and decide if any of your wisdom teeth needs to be removed.

In case of symptoms such as fluid-filled cavities or dental caries, removing the impacted wisdom teeth is a good option. Also, removal of impacted wisdom teeth is advisable if they have already started affecting the adjacent teeth.
