How to Treat Hypothyroidism

Wednesday, 25 May 2011 03:01 PM EDT

Hypothyroidism is characterized by an underactive thyroid gland that produces less thyroid hormone than that required by our body.

An underactive thyroid can lead to a number of thyroid problems such as weight gain, pituitary gland problems, and constipation.

The following are various treatments for hypothyroidism:

1. Thyroid hormone pills: Administering hormone pills is a common treatment for hypothyroidism. Their right dosage is determined considering the results of preliminary testing. It is important to monitor fluctuations in the hormone levels through follow-up tests.
2. Thyroid hormone supplements: These artificially provide the hormones that your body is not able to produce sufficiently. Treating hypothyroidism may take more than a few months even with thyroid supplements.
3. Thyroid medications: Armour®, thyroxine, etc. as prescribed by your doctor.
4. Synthetic thyroid hormones like levothyroxine (trade names Synthroid® and Levoxyl®). Synthetic T3 hormones are also available.
