Role of Diet in Parkinson's Disease

Monday, 28 February 2011 04:19 PM EST

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to loss of control of motor abilities. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may include tremors and difficulty in movement, walking, and coordination.

Although a Parkinson’s disease diet may be varied, there are some foods that can help prevent as well as stabilize the disease. Eating a well-balanced diet is essential for treating Parkinson’s disease.

A high-protein diet may also be recommended by doctors for treating Parkinson’s disease. A Parkinson’s disease diet may include high-fiber foods such as vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain foods like rice, cereals, and bran. It is advisable to include fresh fruits in the Parkinson’s disease diet and limit sugar intake.

A Parkinson’s disease diet should contain a moderate amount of salt and high water intake. Alcoholic beverages may be prohibited because some of them interfere with Parkinson’s disease medications. Eating a diet that is low in red meat and high in protein content may also be a stabilizing factor for Parkinson’s disease. Including trout, salmon, and other fish proteins may be beneficial.
