H Pylori Natural Treatment Advice From Gastroenterology Study

Helicobacter pylori, commonly called H. pylori, is a pathogen that can be persistent and difficult to treat and can lead to many gastric diseases. A study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology offers advice about possible natural treatments for those who suffer with the bacteria.

H. pylori infection can continue throughout life and is associated with such ailments as gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. About two-thirds of the world’s population is infected with H. pylori, and most never experience symptoms, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Current treatments for H. pylori include antibiotics to kill the bacteria, and H2-blockers, and proton pump inhibitors to reduce stomach acid.

According to the gastroenterology study, “Exploring Alternative Treatments for Helicobacter Pylori Infection,” current traditional therapy fails in more than 20 percent of H. pylori cases because of the pathogen’s resistance to antimicrobial drugs and patients’ non-adherence to the treatments, which are costly, complex, and carry side effects. While alternative therapies haven’t been effective in eradicating the bacteria, they show promising benefits, the study said. Those benefits include reducing H. pylori infection symptoms and side effects of traditional treatments, which could help to increase the success rate of those treatments.

Among the natural substances that have been found to inhibit H. pylori growth or reduce symptoms are garlic, broccoli spouts, green tea, red wine, licorice, and honey. Probiotics and some fungi also were found to have benefits in H. pylori treatment.

Further research is needed to determine more precise instructions on how these natural products could be integrated into a structured health program, the report says.

“As long as a vaccine or new antibiotics remain unavailable, the synergism of allopathic and alternative treatments is most likely the best choice,” the report said.
