Springfield Armory has been making some of the most popular firearms in the United States since 1974, although its roots go back to 1777 when it was founded under orders from George Washington.
The armory’s 1911 Series, manufactured for the general public after the military retired it in the 1980s, is a popular firearm for the Geneseo, Illinois, company. Numerous companies now manufacture a 1911 handgun but Springfield Armory was the first to do so,
the company website said.
“Modern pistol designs have made the 1911 obsolete in its role as a combat sidearm. It’s finicky and demands constant attention that a warfighter can’t afford to offer. But when it’s tuned and running well, it’s the most accurate pistol out there,” according to a review of the 1911 series
on the website Gear Scout Military Times. “Warnings aside, the pistol’s appeal is strong and romantic. Picking up the pistol feels like shaking hands with John Wayne. It shoots man-sized rounds and, when tuned, it shoots a quarter-sized group at 50 yards.”
There are many 1911s to choose from, depending on a shooter’s needs, the armory website said. For example, the 1911 EMP Model (Enhanced Micro Pistol) offers shorter dimensions and is appropriate for everyday carry, or concealed carry. The 1911 Loaded Model, made of stainless steel, is also popular, and is built on a full-size frame and slide.
Along with the wide variety of 1911s, Springfield Armory is known for
its M1A Rifle Series and its XD series. The M1A was designed by the armory as a civilian option for the military’s M14, and it offers buyers a legal, semiautomatic version,
the company website said.
The XD series is a polymer pistol introduced by the company in 2001 as a full-size, compact, or sub-compact gun.
“This gun is more accurate that it has a right to be. If 9mm packed .30-30 ballistics, I’d take it hunting in a heartbeat,”
said a reviewer of the XD(m) on The Truth About Guns.
