Test the Size Out and Consider the Caliber

It is important that you have something that will fit in your hand and has a frame your body can support. An article in My Gun Culture advises, “Bigger is actually better,” since larger guns absorb more recoil than smaller ones. Unless you are trained and strong, don't choose something too small, load it with .45 and expect that it will not be too much for you.

Selecting a Firearm for Personal or Home Defense

Protecting your family is your number one priority, so you should be especially meticulous when choosing this weapon. If you're planning on carrying a firearm on your person, a lightweight handgun is preferable. The Heckler & Koch USP semiautomatic compact pistol is ideal for this purpose. While it is small and easy to hold, it is still powerful because of its available cartridges: 9 mm, .40 Smith & Wesson, .45 ACP and .357 SIG. If you're looking for less recoil, choose the smaller caliber like 9mm. The beauty of the USP series is that it is also available in full size, so you can shoot all calibers with less kick than the compact. If you're looking to carry and conceal the compact is better but the full-size is ideal for your gun safe at home.

Choosing a Rifle

Heckler & Koch offers many rifles, including the HK416. The Truth About Guns reviewed the HK416 and praised it for the durability of its barrel and the free-floating hand guard system. This allows the barrel to move separately from the handguard and improves accuracy in conjunction with the Picatinny rails on all four sides that are full-length. The short stroke piston system that the HK416 uses is much cleaner than the traditional gas expansion system, making this an all-around great gun.
