Gun Dogs: Are Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers Good Dogs for Family Pets?

By    |   Sunday, 15 November 2015 09:07 PM EST

Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers, or tollers, for short, are gun dogs known for their water-side dance that draws the attention of nearby ducks. The smallest of the retrievers, they make ideal hunting companions, and great family pets – if your family fits with the toller lifestyle, according to Dog Breed Info Center.

As active gun dogs, tollers require a moderate amount of exercise and outdoor time, according to DogTime. They do best in rural areas with plenty of yard space, but as long as she’s given a good walk daily, she should be happy. Still, a toller is happiest in a family that is more active than average. Families who take frequent hunting trips, hikes, and nature runs are most compatible with this breed.

Tollers are highly trainable, and are generally friendly and playful, making them good with kids. Another kid-friendly factor is their smaller size, but keep in mind that smaller doesn’t mean less energetic. If the kids are energetic and like playing with dogs, the toller is a good fit. They love to play, especially games that involve fetching (they are retrievers, after all).

If anyone in the family is prone to respiratory allergies, the Toller isn’t the best choice, as the breed is known to shed quite a bit, according to Modern Dog magazine. Regular grooming and vacuuming can keep the shedding and dander under control. This is also something to consider if you’re looking for a low-maintenance dog in terms of cleaning up pet hair.

Tollers aren’t guard dogs, though will let you know if anyone approaches the house, according to the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club. Their high-pitched bark may deter break-ins, but this is not a breed that will confront strangers if the screech-like bark alone doesn’t act as a deterrent. If you’re looking for family protection, this isn’t the breed for you.

The screech may not be for everyone, either. Tollers often bark anytime they get excited, making them less than ideal for families living in apartments or townhouses.
