Gun Dog Breeders: Puppy Tips to Get New Hungarian Vizsla Owners Started

By    |   Friday, 22 January 2016 12:28 PM EST

The Hungarian vizsla, described by the American Kennel Club as "gentle, affectionate, energetic, and eager," ranked at No. 33 on its most popular dog breed list.

A powerful hunter showing endurance in the field as well as a loyal companion at home, this gun dog showcases a versatility that breeders seek to maintain through selective breeding. To maximize the potential of a young Hungarian vizsla, there are some tips new puppy owners should know.

1. Use a Reputable Breeder

Young vizsla gun dogs should be acquired only from reputable breeders in order to preserve the quality of the breed and to avoid health and behavior problems.

Good breeders will provide health clearances for certain genetic disorders, proving the good health of the puppy's parents, and indicating a healthy puppy.

Because some health problems do not show up until maturity, responsible breeders do not breed their gun dogs until they are two or three years old.

While the list appeared unvetted, Gun Dog Breeders hosts an online classifieds section of breeders of Hungarian vizslas, among other gun dogs, that is searchable by breed and state.

2. Provide Plenty of Exercise

Bred for centuries to be a hunter, the vizsla has a lot of energy that needs to be channeled appropriately.

New puppy owners should plan for frequent bouts of on-leash and off-leash activities.

Regular, daily exercise is key to keeping the vizsla happy and avoiding negative behaviors.

3. Develop Hunting Skills if Desired

If the vizsla will engage in hunting in the future, the puppy should be introduced to birds at a young age.

An experienced hunter is important for introducing the vizsla pup to birds and guns in a positive way.

The vizsla's intelligence and trainability will help it pick up the necessary hunting skills.

4. Socialize Early

Due to its sensitive nature, the vizsla "can be timid if not properly socialized at a young age," according to Vizsla.com.

Early exposure to different people and situations will help reduce the breed's tendency to be startled by new scenarios.

5. Start Training Early

Positive reinforcement and motivation, instead of harshness, should be used to guide the vizsla's behavior.

Its gentle temperament responds well to praise, treats, and play.

Training should begin right away for just a few minutes at a time.

Multiple short practice sessions each day will soon lead the vizsla pup toward becoming a well-trained dog.
