Gun Dog: Are American Foxhounds Good Dogs for Family Pets?

By    |   Thursday, 29 October 2015 06:38 PM EDT

If you are a hunter and looking for a family pet an American foxhound should be considered when looking for a new gun dog. This breed will function as a guard dog to its family and prove to be an effective hunter in the field as well.

An American foxhound is just about two feet tall in stature and can weigh anywhere from 40 to 60 pounds. Its size makes it easy to travel with on family vacations. The American foxhound is considered a relatively new breed as it did not surface until the 18th century. The dog is the result of crossbreeding between an English foxhound and French foxhound.

Although a hunter at heart, the American foxhound is known for its affection. With proper training, it can fit in well with a large family of people of all ages or other canine pets. However, keep in mind, as a hunting gun dog, the breed will not blend well with small animals in the home, such as guinea pigs or rabbits. The natural instinct of the breed will lead it to injure smaller noncanine pets. Caution should be used when introducing any hunting dog into the home, according to the American Foxhound Club.

City dwellers should steer clear of the American foxhound as the breed is known for anxiety issues and can be known for barking. Owners of this gun dog breed normally live outside city limits and keep the dog outside as well. Its bark can carry for miles, so it is not considered "neighbor-friendly," according to DogScope.com.

American foxhounds require lots of exercise and are best served with a large yard and several long walks per day. Families that do not have the time to meet the dog's needs may be met with adverse behavior. The breed also has a tendency to gain weight if a proper and strict diet is not adhered to.

As with any dog, it's advised to make yourself familiar with the breed, temperament and environmental expectations before making it a member of your family.
