Gun Collection Must-Haves: The 6 Firearms All Serious Gun Collectors Must Own

By    |   Friday, 09 January 2015 04:12 PM EST

Which guns do you aim for? Maybe it depends on the utility of the piece whether you’re using it for hunting or other outdoor activities. But let’s say you want to start a collection, or have one in progress. In that case, it pays to look at what other collectors have amassed — and the more coveted firearms out there.

Here we present a roundup of six firearms for the serious collector. Add any of these to your array — or all of them — and soon you’ll be the envy of your fellow gun owners.

1. Glock semiautomatic. Three different models (the 19, 26, and 36) make the list for serious collectors, says Michael J. Simpson. He’s a former Army soldier and a federally licensed collector. “The quality and reliability of these semiautomatic handguns is undisputed,” he writes.

2. Colt Single Action Army revolver. No less an authority than the NRA singles out this gun for its historical value: “For several decades [it was] the most prevalent focus for collectors interested in full size revolvers from the post-Civil War to turn of the century.”

3. Aguirre y Aranzabal 37 12-gauge shotgun. A Spanish gun like this one in excellent condition and in its original case might set you back $6,000 or more, but it’s an authentic piece of gun history. From the Walnut butt to the English rose and scroll engraving, it’s also a beauty.

4. Colt M1911 pistol. You might say this gun is battle tested, and of course, you’d be literally right. The standard issue sidearm for the U.S. army for eight decades, it saw action in World Wars I and II and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. The model number refers to the year it was introduced.

5. Colt Peacemaker.
This particular gun, which dates to the 1870s, is better known as the legendary Colt 45. It’s the iconic gun of the Wild West, as used by the U.S. Cavalry. One variation of the gun has another legendary name: the Colt Six Shooter, which used bullets interchangeable between guns and rifles.

6. Uzi. This weapon played a pivotal rile for the Israeli army, which began using it in the late 1940s. This submachine gun had the lightweight profile of a pistol, and to date more than 10 million have been manufactured, Popular Mechanics reports.
