Former Washington Redskins quarterback Danny Wuerfell has been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder that causes paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome, reports
ABC News.
Wuerfell first noticed that he was losing sensation in both his legs and strength in his arms shortly following a stomach virus June 4. The theory is that his otherwise healthy immune system mistakenly began attacking the nerves that control movement and sensation, rather than the virus.
“He’s hanging in there,” said wife Jessica. “It’s a distressing situation but, to be honest, his faith is strong.”
Wuerfell has three young children with his wife.
