Google’s page design today, or its doodle, celebrates the 189th birthday of Gregor Mendel , the man considered to be the father of genetics, PC Magazine reports.
"We celebrate Gregor Mendel, Austrian botanist and father of genetics, born July 20, 1822. Peas enjoy!" Google tweeted this morning.
The company spells out its name using pea plants in honor of Mendel. Mendel used pea plants to map out genetic traits that were passed from generation to generation thereby changing the course of modern biology and introducing an entirely new field to science; genetics.
Using these peas, Mendel was able to identify certain characteristics as dominant and others as recessive.
Google is not the only company to honor the revolutionary scientiest. The Mendel Museum of Genetics in the Czech Republic is offering free admission today.
