Green coffee bean extract has been the subject of numerous studies, as researchers analyze its side effects, as well as potential benefits in helping health concerns such as weight loss, heart disease and diabetes.

Exciting Discovery: Ancient Herb Offers Natural Thyroid Support

A green coffee bean is an unroasted coffee bean. The extract contains naturally-occurring caffeine and an antioxidant called chlorogenic acid, which is lowered during the roasting process, according to WebMD. Green coffee extract has been cited as a weight loss supplement and used as an ingredient in weight-loss products, though its effectiveness has been debated.

Last year, one of the main trials showing the benefits was retracted and study sponsor Applied Food Sciences was fined by the Federal Trade Commission.

While the discussion continues, other potential benefits and side effects have been examined. One of those is whether GCE pills can affect a person's mood. Puregreencoffee.com cited consumer claims that the green coffee antioxidants "improves mood" and the small amounts of caffeine served as an energy booster. Those two aspects were noted as a "remarkable extra green coffee bean extract benefit."

Even if the chlorogenic acid results in a better frame of mind and increased energy for those taking it, the debunked weight loss claims by Dr. Oz — which initially vaulted the green coffee bean extract to the public consciousness — may be enough to keep consumers away.
