Green coffee bean extract has several potential side effects, yet it is also credited with numerous health benefits, including weight loss, lower blood sugar, and heart benefits, because the green beans contain the antioxidant chlorogenic acid.

Some research that showed the product's effectiveness for weight loss has since been retracted due to questions about the reliability of the data. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued one maker for falsely claiming scientific backing on their claims that the supplement could spur weight loss.

However, the debate continues. Chlorogenic acid has been studied extensively, and appears to be increasingly linked to various good health outcomes, such as fat-burning and metabolic benefits. Other foods also contain chlorogenic acid, like blueberries, tea, and sunflower seeds, though coffee in its raw form has high amounts of the chemical.

Caffeine-based supplements can react with other supplements, according to nutritionist Cynthia Sass, who told Shape.com, "For example, taking one with another stimulant (like guarana or mate) can trigger a synergistic effect that could increase blood pressure to dangerous levels. A high caffeine intake can also trigger the loss of calcium and magnesium. And there's a long list of prescription medications that interact with caffeine, from diabetes and blood pressure drugs to meds used for depression.

WebMD, cautions that it's important to consult with a doctor regarding any supplements, so he can look for any potential side effects or interactions with medications, especially ones that are taken regularly.

Specifically, green coffee interacts with many medicines, including stimulants, blood thinners, and medicines for heart problems, weak bones, lung diseases, menopause, depression and schizophrenia, among others. One also shouldn't take green coffee along with herbal stimulants or other caffeine-based supplements, according to WebMD.
