Green Coffee Beans Extract Reviews: What Nutritionists/Dieticians Say About the Supplement

By    |   Monday, 16 March 2015 01:23 PM EDT

Green coffee bean extract has been touted as having the natural ability to boost weight loss by helping the body to burn fat at a higher rate. Some manufacturers claim it also balances blood sugar levels, reduces sugar cravings, is a powerful antioxidant and may lower blood sugar.

None of these statements have been approved by the FDA and the efficacy of green coffee bean extract has come under intense scrutiny. However, there are some consumer testimonials that attest to the benefits of the supplement.

Exciting Discovery: Ancient Herb Offers Natural Thyroid Support

According to WebMD, "Green coffee beans are coffee beans that have not yet been roasted. The roasting process of coffee beans reduces amounts of the chemical chlorogenic acid. Therefore, green coffee beans have a higher level of chlorogenic acid compared to regular, roasted coffee beans. Chlorogenic acid in green coffee is thought to have health benefits for heart disease, diabetes, weight loss, and others."

Christian L. Seher, MS, RD, LD from Today's Dietician reports that there is mounting scientific evidence that drinking coffee can have health benefits which include weight management and improved glycemic indicators. However, Seher points out, "until more legitimate clinical research becomes available, dietitians should keep an eye out for clients using green coffee bean extract and spill the beans, cautioning them that the current evidence regarding its safety or efficacy isn't strong enough to recommend its use as a weight-loss aid."

Exciting Discovery: Effective Nutrient Formulation Surprises Scientists

Dr. Mehmet Oz strongly endorsed green coffee bean extract as an effective supplement for weight loss. During one of his shows Oz stated, "You may think magic is make believe, but this little bean has scientists saying they found a magic weight loss cure for every body type." However, the study that he cited as evidence was later retracted and after scrutiny by federal regulators, Oz issued a statement indicating the need for further study, reports The Washington Post.

Nutritional journalist and registered dietitian Janet Helm says that beneath the hype over green coffee bean extract there may be a nugget of truth. "Often preliminary studies do indicate a 'suggestion' or the possibility a natural compound could have potentially beneficial effects in the body. That appears to be the case with green coffee beans, which are rich in a type of polyphenol called chlorogenic acid (the purported active ingredient in the supplements)." However, Helm suggests not relying on a miracle pill and instead to take concrete steps, such as eating more fruits and vegetables each day, to assist with weight management.
