‘The Great Hamster of Alsace’ Wins in French Court

The adage 'Truth is stranger than fiction' held true in Europe this week. The Court of Justice in Luxembourg, France, the EU’s highest court, ruled Thursday that France was guilty of not adequately protecting its hamster population, specifically the Great Hamster of Alsace, the last non-extinct hamster species in Western Europe, reports The New York Times.

The court ruled that if France doesn’t change its agricultural and urbanization policies to protect the 10-inch furry creature, they will be subject to fines up to $24.6 million.

There are supposedly only 800 of the Great Hamster left in France. It feeds on grass, alfalfa, and corn.
